Goldstream pattern ideas

Our April Shawl Knit-Along starts in a few weeks and I thought now would be a good time to start talking pattern ideas. Specifically, let’s start today with patterns that work well with our Goldstream colourways. Coincidentally, they all use short-rows to work a little magic, but all in different ways.

Goldstream was from our first ever summer club with Andrea Rangel. We worked together to design both the yarn and the pattern so they are a beautiful pair. Most of the shawl is simple soothing garter stitch, with little short-row leaves.

Prism Break by Alison Bjornson was designed specifically for this yarn (her first and only pattern!) It has an asymmetrical, bias construction and short-row bands of eyelets at each pop of colour.

Bermuda Scarf by Ilga Leja is a bottom-up triangle that was designed for long-repeat self-patterning yarn. It creates an organic flow to the colours that reminds me of waves or rolling hills.

Our base yarns and skein sizes have changed over the years. Fortunately, these three patterns are all "knit until you run out of yarn" so you can directly substitute for a different fingering weight yarn base or skein size. The Bermuda Scarf does use row counts, but you can simply bind off early if you run low on yarn, or continue on in pattern if you have extra.

All three of the shawls in the photos were knit using our Skaha colourway.  The patterns, from top to bottom, are Goldstream, Prism Break (photo by Alison Bjornson), and Bermuda Scarf (photo by Sue Carney).
