Socktober is almost here!
Socktober is that annual tradition where knitters celebrate the return of cool weather and guard themselves against months of cold toes by knitting a whole lot of socks. At Gauge, we are absolutely 100% on board with this tradition.
What is the Socktober KAL?
Grab your needles, a warm drink, and settle in for a month of knitting fun. With 31 stripes - one for each day in October - you’ll watch your project unfold like a woolly countdown to Halloween.
Is there a pattern included?
This KAL is yarn-only, so you can choose your favourite sock or accessory pattern. If you’re looking for recommendations, we will share some in the Knit-Along forum on Ravelry.
Which yarn should I choose: Round Trip or One Way Trip?
Round Trip: Four full repeats of the 31-stripe sequence for perfectly matching socks. To have a pair of socks by the end of the month you'll need to knit one stripe (or more) on each sock every day.
One Way Trip: One single run of the 31 colours. Even though it’s SOCKtober, you don’t have to knit socks — you could make a cowl, hat, or anything else you'd like.
Edit: I made a little video here showing the difference between the two options.
Do I need the mini skein?
The Haunted Macaron mini skein is optional, but it’s perfect for heels, toes, and cuffs — especially if you want to stretch your yardage or highlight the purples in the main skein.
Do I have to knit one stripe a day?
Nope! That’s just the suggested pace. Some knitters speed ahead, others save it for cozy binge-knitting on the weekends. This is your project. The “rules” are just for fun.
How do I join the KAL?
- Purchase your Socktober yarn. That's it! There is no need to sign up for the KAL separately.
- We will send out an email in late September to remind you of all the KAL info, but all the fun will be over on our Ravelry forum.
What if I start late?
Totally fine! You can join at any time. The fun is in knitting along with the community, not in keeping strict pace.
Can I substitute another Gauge Dye Works colorway?
Yes! You can use last year’s Jack-o-Lantern yarn or this year’s Pumpkin Stripe Latte.
Where’s the colour map?
Usually, we have a colour map for every yarn, but for the October yarn, part of the fun and mystery is watching the colours evolve over the month. No spoilers! You’ll discover each new stripe as you knit.
Update: I had so many requests for a colour map that I decided I should share it after all. You can find it here.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes — but please note we do not ship to the EU at the moment due to GPSR regulations.
Will you have this yarn at Fibrations and Knit City?
Yes I’ll have this yarn with me at Fibrations and Knit City! Shop at our booth, or order online and we’ll bring your order for pickup at the event. Use the code FIBRATIONS2025 or KNITCITY2025 at checkout.
Anything else I should know?
- Orders will close Friday, August 15th to make sure we have time to dye and ship your yarn.
- The KAL is meant to be low-pressure — it’s all about enjoying your knitting and connecting with other makers.
If you still have questions, please get in touch. We’re happy to help.
