What is the Summer Club, exactly?
The Summer Club is a yarn + pattern kit we release each summer in collaboration with Andrea Rangel. Each project is thoughtfully designed: Andrea creates the pattern, and we dye the yarn to match it perfectly.
Your kit includes:
- A skein of self-striping yarn (your choice of 3 colourways)
- A downloadable PDF pattern
- Access to a friendly knit-along in our Ravelry forum
It’s like a summer vacation in a skein—a joyful, creative project with just the right amount of challenge.
Does one skein include the contrast yarn too?
Yes! Each skein includes everything you need. When you wind your yarn, the pattern will walk you through how to divide the skein into three balls: two self-striping balls (one for each sock) and a third ball of dark contrast yarn, which you’ll use for the colourwork and heel.
What if I don’t like doing stranded colourwork? Can I still join the club?
Yes! The racoon face and paws are done in stranded colourwork (working with two strands of yarn on the same row). That section is just a few inches long, and Andrea’s pattern includes clear instructions and support. Most of the sock is simple ribbing and stockinette—so if you're colourwork-curious, this is a great way to dip your toe (pun intended) into something new.
And if you 100% don't like stranded colourwork, you can skip it completely and knit the feet in a solid colour (maybe using the contrast colour for the toe?)
Are these socks knit top-down or toe-up?
These socks are knit top-down.
What if I don’t like knitting socks? Can I use the yarn for something else?
You can—but we don’t recommend it. This yarn is dyed specifically for the raccoon sock pattern. The stripes and contrast colours are engineered to show up in exactly the right places (like that adorable face and tail!). If you use it for something else, the magic may not land quite the same way.
With that said, we have seen all sorts of creative variations in past clubs, and you're welcome to join the club and the KAL with your own adaptation of the yarn and pattern.
And if this project isn't for you at all, no worries—our August club will be a hat!
Can I add extra skeins?
Yes! If you're making socks for multiple people or want to stash your favourite colourway, you can order extra skeins here. Just make sure you're also ordering a full kit—extra skeins are available to club members only.
Can I buy the yarn and pattern separately?
Not at this time. The yarn and pattern are exclusive to the Summer Club and are only available as a kit. They'll be released separately next year.
Why? Because it's the simplest and fairest way for us (Catherine and Andrea) to collaborate. We share the work of creating the club—designing, dyeing, testing, and supporting—so offering the kit as a whole helps us share the rewards equally too.
When will the yarn ship?
Kits will ship by mid-May, so you’ll have everything in time for our June 1 cast-on. The pattern will be sent by email, also in mid-May.
Please note: if you add anything else to your order, it will all ship together.
What is the knit-along like?
The KAL is hosted in our Ravelry forum. It's relaxed, friendly, and totally optional. You'll find support, community, and helpful tutorials from Andrea Rangel—and zero pressure. Just cast on, knit at your own pace, and enjoy the process.
Can I sign up for the whole summer at once?
No—each Summer Club project is sold individually this year, and this is the first of the season. Signups for the August club will open in June.
What yarn base is included?
We’re using our 4-Ply Sock base for this kit. It’s an 80/20 superwash Merino and nylon blend that’s soft, smooth, and durable—perfect for socks.
What sizes does the pattern include?
The pattern includes three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, with finished foot circumferences of 19.0 cm, 21.5 cm, and 24.0 cm (7.75", 8.50", and 9.75").
Can I choose my colourway?
Yes! There are three deep-forest-inspired colourways to choose from:
- Midnight Paws (racoon grey)
- Witching Hour (dusk-y purple)
- Forest Floor (warm brown)

When do signups close?
In order to give us enough time to get all the yarn dyed and in the mail on time, we will close signups close Friday, April 25 at midnight.
(Actually it'll be when I wake up Saturday morning, so it will be at least midnight in all time zones.)
